American Express has some problems with their credit cards, and that can seem strange to say because Amex credit cards are some of the best you can get (especially if you like travel credit cards). One big issue is redeeming Amex Membership Rewards points via the Amex Travel portal; many of the values you get for your points are bad (and they often vary a lot, making it confusing). Another issue is that there isn’t a downgrade path for the main Amex cards that results in a $0 annual fee. You can downgrade from the Amex Platinum Card to the Amex Gold Card, and even lower to the Amex Green Card, but that Green Card still has a current annual fee of $150.
