It looks like American Express is beating Chase…for now. The Amex Platinum Card refresh went incredibly well while the Chase Sapphire Reserve refresh seemed to have one problem after another. Click “Show More” to see Ad Disclosure. In the premium travel credit card market, both the Amex Platinum Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve lead the way. Both cards received massive updates in 2025 (Sapphire Reserve in June, Amex Platinum in September), but the way each bank went about the updates was quite different. In fact, I’d say American Express won. The reasons for this are many, and they include Chase not having a super attractive welcome offer on the Sapphire Reserve during its relaunch, Chase adding new credit card application rules for both their Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve products (mainly consisting of the new ‘Chase Pop Up Jail’ message), a lot of chaos with their initial applications and Priority Pass benefit enrollment, and more.
