Basically, Rakuten is an affiliate network. Here’s how that business model works: 1. Rakuten sends you to online retailers to buy goods & services. It uses tracking code on the backend to determine if you made a purchase and for how much. 2. If you make a purchase, the retailer gives Rakuten a commission as a ‘thank you’ for sending customers (usually a percent of the sale price or a flat rate) 3. Rakuten shares a part of that commission with you! Best of all, Rakuten literally sends you to the merchant’s actual website, so your shopping experience is identical as if you had gone there directly. So whether you’re shopping at Nike, Under Armour, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, or elsewhere, it’s definitely worth going through Rakuten first to see if that retailer is on Rakuten’s portal. If so, then you can earn more cash back! PAYOUTS - Rakuten pays out 4x per year (February, May, August, November), roughly mid-month … that is, the 15th plus or minus a day or two. Payment Schedule & Earning Periods - Purchases made Jan 01 - Mar 31 = Payout on May 15 - Purchases made Apr 01 - Jun 30 = Payout on Aug 15 - Purchases made Jul 01 - Sep 30 = Payout on Nov 15 - Purchases made Oct 01 - Dec 31 = Payout on Feb 15 NOTE: Your cash-back balance must be $5.00 or more by the end of an earning period period to receive a payout. If it's less, it won't expire, but instead will roll into the next period so you can keep earning until that $5.00 threshold is met or exceeded. Amex Membership Rewards points are one option, and you can link your account from there. In general, I recommend earning Amex points if you want to redeem for travel or if you have the Amex Schwab Platinum Card to redeem into your brokerage account (currently at 1.10¢ per point … e.g. 10,000 points = $110). Rakuten is also stackable with other offers, like Amex Offers / Chase Offers / Capital One offers / etc. This means you can earn regular credit card rewards, PLUS whatever card-linked offers you may have added, PLUS Rakuten cash back, PLUS discount codes, etc. It can become highly rewarding :D You can also refer friends & family with your Rakuten referral link! The standard offer is usually to earn $30 cash back or 3,000 Amex points when your friend signs up for the first time with your link and spends $30 or more in the first 90 days. You'll earn $30 and so will your friend! Elevated referral offers occur, too! As I write this, the current offer is $40 cash back or 4,000 Amex points when your friend signs up for the first time with your link and spends $40 or more in the first 90 days. So whether you’re doing holiday shopping, special event shopping, or simply buying something for yourself, remember that Rakuten is a great way to put more money in your pocket!
