There are a TON of different credit card rewards programs, as well as loyalty programs for airlines, hotels, and more (and don't forget about those cash back credit cards)!
As you earn rewards, you'll want to make sure you keep your accounts active to avoid losing them from expiration.

Do credit card points expire? Do credit card miles expire? Does cash back expire?
ANSWER:
Yes / no. It depends on the rewards program.
4 MAIN TYPES OF REWARDS
1. Bank points / Credit card points
2. Hotel points
3. Air miles
4. Cash back
BANK POINTS / CREDIT CARD POINTS
- Amex Membership Rewards Points: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- Bank of America Points: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- Capital One Venture / Spark Miles: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- Chase Ultimate Rewards Points: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- Citi ThankYou Points: (1) Points do not expire as long as you keep the card account open that earned them. (2) If you close a card account, the ThankYou points earned on that card account will expire in 60 days, even if you have another card open that earns ThankYou points. (3) If you share points with another ThankYou member, those points will expire 90 days after they are transferred & received by the other person.
- Discover Miles: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- U.S. Bank Altitude Points: Never if you have at least 1 active card that earns them.
- Wells Fargo GoFar Rewards Points: Varies by card. See video.
HOTEL POINTS
- Best Western: Never if your account is open
- Choice Privileges: 18 months of no activity
- Hilton Honors: 15 months of no activity
- IHG Rewards: 12 months of no activity
- Marriott Bonvoy: 24 months of no account activity
- Radisson Rewards: 24 months of no account activity
- World of Hyatt: 24 months of no account activity
- Wyndham Rewards: (1) All points expire after 18 months of no account activity. (2) Individual points expire 4 years after they are earned.
NOTE: Account activity refers to earning or redeeming points. Qualifying activity can vary from one program to another. However, earning points via stays & credit cards qualifies to reset the expiration clock.
AIR MILES
- Alaska Mileage Plan: 24 months of no account activity
- American AAdvantage: (1) Miles expire after 24 months of no account activity. (2) Miles do not expire if member is under age 21.
- Delta SkyMiles: Never if account is open
- Frontier Miles: 6 months of no account activity
- HawaiianMiles: 18 months of no account activity
- JetBlue TrueBlue: Never if account is open
- Southwest Rapid Rewards: Never if account is open
- Spirit Free Spirit Miles: 12 months of no account activity
- United MileagePlus: Never if account is open
CASH BACK CREDIT CARDS
- Amex: Never if account is open
- Bank of America: Never if account is open
- Capital One: Never if account remains open
- Citi: Cash back expires when Cardmembers have not earned any cash back from purchases or payments for those purchases with a 12-month period.
- Discover: Never if account is open
- U.S. Bank: Cash rewards will expire at the end of the calendar month 36 months after the billing cycle in which they were earned.
- Wells Fargo: Never if account is open
NOTE ABOUT TRANSFER PARTNERS:
Using transfer partners to convert bank points into air miles or hotel points does not reset the expiration clock for those air / hotel programs. You must earn, redeem, or buy points or miles.
