BACKGROUND
Chase credit cards earn Ultimate Rewards points (exceptions include the cobranded cards with airlines, hotels, etc.). These Ultimate Rewards points can be redeemed for a lot of things, including travel, cash back, gift cards, and more.
If you want “cash back,” you actually have 2 options to consider.
The 1st is regular cash back.
The 2nd is using a feature called Pay Yourself Back.
Let’s compare both of them…
CASH BACK
This is when you redeem your Chase points for cash via statement credit or deposit to a checking or savings account. You can then use your cash back for whatever you like. With this method, 1 point = 1¢ ($0.01), so 10,000 points = $100.
PAY YOURSELF BACK
This is when you redeem your Chase points for cash via statement credit (no deposit to a bank account) and ONLY in select categories that are available at the time – and they can change over time, too. With this method, 1 point = 1.10¢, 1.25¢, or 1.50¢ each depending on the card you have.
- Chase Freedom Flex = 1.10¢ or 1.25¢ per point in very limited categories
- Freedom Unlimited = 1.10¢ or 1.25¢ per point in very limited categories
- Chase Sapphire Preferred = 1.25¢ per point
- Chase Ink Business Preferred = 1.25¢ per point
- Chase Sapphire Reserve = 1.50¢ per point
HOW TO USE PAY YOURSELF BACK
1. Log into your Chase account
2. Click on a Chase credit card that earns Ultimate Rewards points

4. Once you’re in the rewards portal, go to the Main Menu
5. Select Pay Yourself Back
6. Select the eligible categories you want to cover with points

You’ll receive a statement credit to reduce / cover the cost of your selected purchases within 3 business days, and it will appear on your monthly Chase credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles.
