American Express issues some of the best credit cards for cash back (like the Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card, Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card and Amex Cash Magnet Card) and travel rewards (like the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card and Amex Green Card – plus other airline and hotel credit cards), so it’s no surprise that many of us want to get more than one credit card from them :D.
And that begs the question…
How many American Express credit cards can you get?
I spoke with 9 different Amex customer services representatives to see what I could find out.
HERE ARE THE FINDINGS!
QUESTION: How many Amex cards can you get?
- ANSWER 1 (Online Chat): No limit
- ANSWER 2 (Online Chat): 4 personal cards, including charge cards. Does not include business cards.
- ANSWER 3 (Online Chat): No limit
- ANSWER 4 (Online Chat): No limit
- ANSWER 5 (Online Chat): No limit
- ANSWER 6 (Mobile Chat): 99 cards
- ANSWER 7 (Online Chat): 4 lending cards
- ANSWER 8 (Phone): 2 cards in 90 days, 4 lending cards, 10 charge cards
- ANSWER 9 (Phone): 5 lending cards (includes personal & business combined), 10 charge cards (includes personal & business combined)
MOST PROBABLE ANSWER…
Although the answers varied widely, the most common real-world answer based on data points has been…
- Personal Cards: 4 – 5 (Varies by person / account, personal & business cards combined)
- Charge Cards: 10 (Personal & business cards combined)
This has also been my persounal experience in the past. I had hit the 4-5 card limit, so when I applied for another Amex card, I received an instant denial. I then called the Amex Reconsideration Line and learned the reason was for having too many accounts open. So, I closed one credit card account to have the application pushed through to an approval.
