Amex Pop Up Jail is NOT a fun place to be.
But fortunately, it’s not permanent, and getting out is actually quite easy – it just takes some time.
1. WHAT IS IT? (What is the Amex Pop Up Window?)
It’s a window that may appear immediately after you submit a credit card application but before a credit check is performed. It’s a warning that you are not eligible to receive the welcome offer if you decide to proceed.
Translation: “No bonus points & no intro APR for you!”
However, you may still be able to get the card product itself if you decide to Continue & Submit, or you can Cancel your application with no credit check / inquiry.
2. WHAT CAUSES IT? (What causes the Amex Pop Up Window?)
While not a complete list, here are some likely scenarios that could cause the Amex Pop Up Window to appear:
a. Receiving too many Amex welcome bonuses*
b. Receiving too many introductory APR offers*
c. Opening too many Amex cards*
d. Closing too many Amex cards*
e. If you’ve had the same card in the past
f. Other factors
* Within a given period of time (not publicly known)
3. WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET IT (How to get out of Amex Pop Up Jail)
There’s not an exact science behind breaking free from the American Express Pop Up Jail, but here are some suggestions that may help accelerate your freedom :D
a. DON’T APPLY for any Amex cards
b. DON’T CLOSE any Amex cards
c. USE your current Amex cards regularly
d. REPEAT Steps 1 – 3 for several months
e. APPLY again
4. WHICH CARDS ARE AFFECTED?
Basically, any of them could be :D Including…
Amex Cards with no preset spending limit, like:
- Amex Platinum Card
- Amex Gold Card
- Amex Green Card
- Amex Plum Card
(This includes personal and business versions)
Amex Cards for travel, like:

And the list goes on from there!
