The $250 annual fee for my Amex Gold Card posted! :D So…I contacted American Express to see if they had a retention offer to help me justify paying it. Watch what happened! American Express Membership Rewards Points are some of the most valuable travel rewards points you can earn; however, you’ll want to make sure that the $250 annual fee is something you can make sense of based on the amount of rewards you can earn along with the benefits & credits available each year. As much as I love the Amex Gold Card, it’s definitely starting to feel more like a coupon book with all the credits that need to be used with a bunch of restrictions on them. (That’s why I’ve also got my eye on the U.S. Bank Altitude Go card, which also earns 4X points on dining with NO annual fee) :D That said, I decided to contact American Express’ Customer Support and ask for a retention offer to help me justify the annual fee over getting the U.S. Bank card. Ultimately, the rep offered me 30,000 Membership Rewards points with no spend requirement! Since I value those points more than the cost of the $250 annual fee, I agreed to keep the card open for another year and accepted the offer.
