FIRST, the Amex Gold Card comes with a signup bonus of 35,000 – 50,000 Membership Rewards points, depending on the current promotion (sometimes it can be a little higher, too). This gives you a TON of rewards points up front so you can redeem for that special travel trip sooner than later.
SECOND, and the reason why the Amex Gold Card is SO GREAT FOR FOODIES, is the fact that the bonus categories are very strong for food-related purchases. You’ll earn 4X points at restaurants and 4X points on U.S. supermarkets. You’ll also receive an annual $120 dining credit to use at any of these locations: Grubhub, Seamless, Shake Shack, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and Boxed. This list may change over time, too.
THIRD, the Amex Gold does a good job for travel, too. You’ll earn 3X points on flights booked directly with the airline and receive a $100 Airline Fee Credit each year. This credit can be used for flight incidentals, including:
- Checked baggage fees (including overweight / oversize baggage)
- Itinerary change fees
- Phone reservation fees
- Pet flight fees
- Seat assignment fees
- In-flight amenity fees (including beverages, food, pillow / blankets, headphones)
- In-flight entertainment fees (excluding WiFi since it’s not billed by the airline)
- Airport lounge access (including day passes and annual memberships)
NOTE: you’ll have to select an airline with which to use this $100 credit. You can change the airline once per year in January, and the current list of available options are: United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, American Airlines & US Airways, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines & AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Alaska Airlines
FOURTH, you’ll receive a complimentary ShopRunner membership that normally costs $79 per year. ShopRunner gives you an Amazon Prime-like experience with 100+ retailers that may not sell on Amazon. You will get free 2-day shipping and FREE RETURNS!
FIFTH, like all other Amex credit cards, you will see a list of Amex Offers when you log into your account. Think of these like additional discounts that provide extra points, statement credits, and cash back when you shop at select retailers / merchants. Some of the recent ones I’ve seen are with: Marriott hotels, Kimpton Hotels, Ray-Ban, ExxonMobil, InterContinental Hotels, Gelson’s, Hotels.com, and MANY MORE!
SIXTH, it’s a METAL CREDIT CARD! (Not a benefit, but definitely a cool factor) ;-)
And SEVENTH, the Amex Gold Card becomes a VERY POWERFUL cash back credit card when you pair it with the American Express Platinum Card for Schwab. The Schwab Platinum Card allow the Gold Card to earn 5% cash back at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, 3.75% cash back on flights booked directly with the airline, and 1.25% cash back everywhere else.
