The American Express Platinum Card is one of the BEST credit cards out there if you love to travel (like a VIP)! Click "Show More" to see Ad Disclosure.
Yes, it’s a ‘luxury metal credit card’ costing $550 per year, but for the right person, paying that annual fee can be worth it.

Here are the Top 5 Reasons why you may want to consider having it in your wallet:
1. LARGE SIGNUP BONUS: The Amex Platinum Card normally has a signup bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards points, though depending on the time of year, you may also see offers for 75,000 … 100,000 … or even 125,000 points. The spend requirement can vary, but it is normally $5,000 of spend within the first 3 months. This is a great way to get a bunch of points up front to redeem for travel, the best way being to transfer them into partner airline programs to book flights. Unless you have the Charles Schwab version, cash back is NOT a good redemption option.
2. HIGH EARNING ON TRAVEL: You’ll earn 5X Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly on the card and on prepaid hotels booked through the American Express Travel portal. Other than these 2 categories, this card is not ideal for anything else (at least not in July 2020 as I post this!)
3. PERKS: There are a TON of great travel perks that come with this card: Elite status at Marriott and Hilton (plus Enterprise Rent-A-Car and others), the Fine Hotels & Resorts program, concierge service, and the most comprehensive airport lounge access program I’ve ever seen, including: the Centurion Lounge, Priority Pass, Delta SkyClub, Escape Lounge, and Airspace Lounge networks. If you want a place to relax or get work done with wifi and food in the airport, then using a lounge can be a big help.

4. CREDITS: The Amex Platinum Card will give you the following credits to use every year:
- $200 Uber Credit to be used on rides or on food via Uber Eats. These are issued as $15 monthly credits and $35 in December.
- $200 Airline Fee Credit to use used on incidental charges like checked baggage fees, itinerary change fees, in-flight amenity fees (like beverages, food, etc. – but not WiFi), airport lounge day passes and annual memberships, etc.
- $100 Saks Fifth Avenue Credit to be used at a Saks brick & mortar department store or online at saksfifthavenue.com. This is allocated as two $50 credits. Use the first one between January 01 and June 30 and the second one between July 01 and December 31.
5. IT’S METAL!! Okay…this is not an actual “benefit,” but hey, if you’re paying a $550 annual fee for a credit card, then at least it’s made out of a nice material!
6. (BONUS): American Express also added a couple temporary benefits through December 31, 2020 (unless extended). You’ll receive a $20 per month credit for wireless services (i.e. your phone bill) and an additional $20 per month credit for streaming services.
(Side note: the Platinum Card is actually a charge card, which means there’s no revolving line of credit and your balance is always due in full at the end of each billing cycle. Lately, Amex has been marketing their ‘Pay Over Time’ feature where you CAN carry a balance for certain charges at a given interest rate – never a good idea in general – but at least that allows it to function more like a credit card if needed).
