Business credit cards are a fantastic tool for small business owners. They allow you to separate business and personal finances, often give higher credit limits, help you build business credit for your small business or new LLC, and can even help you preserve your personal credit score in a BIG way. Here’s why… Many small business credit cards DO NOT REPORT to your personal credit report. This means they won’t affect the major factors of your credit score, including: newly opened accounts, age of credit history, payment history, and utilization. None of those factors from a business credit card can impact your personal credit score if those card accounts never get reported in the first place. A great example of this is credit utilization. If you have a large amount of spend each month that consistently uses up a high percentage of your credit line, that can dramatically lower your credit score when the balance gets reported. However, if that high credit utilization doesn’t get reported on your personal file, then it won’t have any effect on your personal credit score at all! Additionally, for individuals interested in the credit card rewards game, the Chase 5/24 Rule is very well known. Fortunately, business credit cards that don’t report to your personal file cannot affect your 5/24 Rule status with Chase (that’s because Chase can only count the newly opened accounts that actually show up on your personal credit report). So, business credit cards can be a great way to earn additional signup bonuses, benefits, and ongoing rewards (particularly in categories not covered on personal cards) without increasing your 5/24 Rule status. A Word of Caution: Some business credit cards may report NEGATIVE information to your personal credit report. This includes things like late payments or other delinquencies. To avoid this, simply make sure to pay on time and keep your account in good standing.
